At a time when there aren’t many events and where physically distancing is still essential, this Augmented Reality tour offers a safe diversion for couples and young families, residents and local tourists alike. It’s a fun and fantastic initiative on the heels of Open Streets that will flow into and complement Amherstburg's annual River Lights Festival.A ghost on a smartphone in King's Navy Yard Park

“This Tour showcases a unique side of Amherstburg and will engage our visitors through smartphones and social media platforms,” said Mayor Aldo DiCarlo in a release. “It provides interactive experiences where guests can visit us safely.”

The Town purchased the Olde Amherstburg Walking Tour App from Pop Sandbox Productions and Publishing for $16,505. Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island provided $15,000 in sponsorship funding and the Town paid $1,505. Maintenance and support for the App is covered for two years and would cost $1,250 per year after that if the tour continues.

“By partnering with the Town of Amherstburg on this augmented reality ghost tour, we are able to create a new form of visitation for the whole family that touches on heritage, history and culture all while garnering support for the social experience in-person and online,” said TWEPI CEO Gordon Orr.

Stories, research and historical information for the ghost tour was collected in collaboration with the Marsh Historical Collection and local historians Debbie and Robert Honor.
